Weavings and Languages by Tereza de Arruda

Celebrating eighteen years of activity at Galeria Via Thorey in Vitória means recognizing not
only the enduring presence of a space dedicated to art but also the ongoing construction of a
territory for dialogue among artists, artistic languages, and audiences. Over nearly two decades,
the gallery has established itself as a meeting point for diverse creative paths, embracing artistic
inquiries that span multiple generations and approaches to contemporary art. Along this journey,
Via Thorey has also solidified its status as a cultural landmark in Vitória, contributing to the
strengthening of the local art scene and expanding its connections to national and international
circuits. By fostering exhibitions, gatherings, and exchanges among artists from diverse
backgrounds, the gallery plays an active role in cultivating an audience receptive to
contemporary art and in developing a dynamic cultural environment within the city. More than
just an exhibition space, it has become a hub for the circulation of ideas and experiences,
playing a significant role in the cultural vitality of Vitória.
The exhibition’s title stems precisely from this multiplicity. *Weavings* (or *Strands*) refers to
processes—the layers of experiences, materials, and histories that constitute each work.
*Languages*, in turn, points to the diversity of formal and conceptual strategies artists employ to
translate their inquiries. Spanning painting, sculpture, collage, installation, and objects, the
exhibition reveals an expanded field where the works intertwine. Although the featured works
originate from varied techniques and contexts, they can be understood through thematic,
conceptual, and aesthetic affinities that organize the exhibition into three fields of inquiry.
Elizabeth Dorazio, constructs delicate compositions through processes of cutting, layering, and
collage. For the artist, the act of cutting is understood as drawing—precise and irreversible—
structuring complex surfaces capable of evoking both natural landscapes and cosmic
constellations. By incorporating chance and error as essential parts of the process, Dorazio
transforms her works into fields of poetic experimentation where nature, the cosmos, and culture
intertwine.
